notes

(Some species of Haplothrips are reported as pest in South Africa, we do not know if they are pests in Kenya or east Africa. Haplothrips are present in East Africa, but some of them are beneficial (predacious) and we do not know the status on the region. This will have to be reviewed when we finish with the datasheets). [br] When the status of Haplothrips in East Africa has been clarified we could decided if we leave this information on egg-laying habits. [br] Biological pesticides: check with list of Seif [br] FW: Include information on synthetic pesticides?

Notes for REVIEW

mh, 18.9.09 The information included under synth. pesticides (caution) in the database notes (above) should be included in the text as it is relevant. General information: an introduction is needed (what is a thrips). Monitoring: include information on mass trapping (ref addresses) Ref addresses of botanicals were transferred to own chapter (Ref. addresses) at the end of page, pls include information on price if possible. Biopesticides: include pyrethrum recipe, include information on gallon (in litres?)

Synthetic pesticides

Management of thrips with pesticides is difficult. Major problems include: a)some thrips rapidly develop resistance to pesticides; b) thrips are very active and may migrate to crops when the effect of the pesticide is over; c) the tendency of thrips to prefer tight protected areas on the plant; d) the failure of many synthetic pesticides to translocate to the flowers where many thrips feed, and e) their ability to transmit virus.

Where chemical control is attempted frequent applications of pesticides are needed. In addition pesticide applications can aggravate thrips problems by destroying natural enemies.
